VERO BEACH — An Okeechobee man was killed Friday evening when he rode his bicycle into traffic on Old Dixie Highway and was struck by a car, police said.

The 42-year-old man, whose name was not disclosed by Florida Highway Patrol, was traveling west from the Chevron gas station at 455 Fourth St. in Vero Beach at 5:25 p.m. Friday when he rode onto Old Dixie Highway.

He did not yield to oncoming traffic, and was struck by an otherwise unidentified sedan driven by a 54-year-old Vero Beach woman who was traveling north, FHP said. The collision threw the man off his bicycle and into the intersection, where he was pronounced dead, troopers said.

The woman, whose name also was not disclosed, was not injured, nor was the 15-year-old Vero Beach girl riding in the sedan, FHP said.
