Deadly crash at Okeechobee, Midway roads under investigation

ST. LUCIE COUNTY – A 45-year-old Okeechobee man died following a crash last week on Okeechobee Road in which his pickup was struck by a utility truck with an attached trailer, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.

The incident was reported at 4:54 p.m. Dec. 15 at Okeechobee and West Midway roads near the St. Lucie County Fairgrounds, according to the FHP. The crash site is in a largely rural area west of Interstate 95.

The Okeechobee man, whose name was not released, was driving a 2012 Ford pickup north on West Midway Road approaching the Okeechobee Road intersection. He had a solid green traffic signal while approaching the intersection.

Meanwhile, a 43-year-old Orlando man drove a 2020 Freightliner east on Okeechobee Road. He had a solid red signal as he approached West Midway Road, the FHP stated.

The Orlando man did not slow and come to a stop, and hit the front of the Okeechobee man’s pickup, the FHP stated.

The Freightliner overturned after the crash and wound up on its right side. The Ford pickup was “redirected in a southerly direction, coming to final rest facing east in the south grass shoulder,” the FHP stated.
