How late can you buy a Mega Millions ticket in Florida?

In Florida, tickets may be purchased until 10 p.m. on the night of the drawing. Tickets purchased after that time will be for the next drawing.

Are lottery winnings subject to taxation?

Federal income taxes will be withheld from Mega Million prizes, as required by the Internal Revenue Code. Any additional federal, state and/or local taxes shall be the responsibility of the winner.

How is a Mega Millions winner paid?

All Mega Millions prizes, excluding the jackpot, will be a one-time cash payment less applicable taxes. Jackpot winners may elect to receive their winning in a one-time cash payment or 30 graduated annual installments. If there is no jackpot winner, the money in the jackpot pool rolls over to the next drawing.

All prizes must be claimed within 180 days of the applicable drawing date. All Mega Millions prizes must be claimed in the state where the ticket was purchased.

What happens to the money if a Mega Millions jackpot ticket is won in Florida but is not claimed?

At the end of the winning state’s claim period (180 days in Florida), the funds to pay a jackpot that go unclaimed will be returned to the lottery members in their proportion of sales for the jackpot rollover series.

In Florida, 80 percent of all unclaimed jackpot prizes are transferred to the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund to benefit education in the state.

Can I keep my lottery winnings secret?

In Florida, beginning May 25, 2022, the names of Lottery winners claiming prizes of $250,000 or greater will be temporarily exempt from public disclosure for 90 days from the date the prize is claimed, unless otherwise waived by the winner.
