Emergency cold weather shelter to open this weekend in Fort Pierce

FORT PIERCE – An emergency cold weather shelter will open Friday as temperatures are expected to drop across the Treasure Coast this weekend, a release states.

In the Image of Christ, a faith-based, non-profit organization, will operate the shelter at Percy Peek Gym, 2902 Avenue D in Fort Pierce, in partnership with St. Lucie County and the City of Fort Pierce.

The shelter opens at 5:30 p.m. Friday and closes at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Temperatures are expected to dip to the mid-40s this weekend with wind gusts reaching 30 mph.

Kathy Copeland, Indian River County spokesperson, said Thursday afternoon a decision has not yet been made whether a shelter will open there. A Martin County spokesperson could not immediately be reached.

In the Vero Beach area, Copeland said a religious charity called The Source at 1015 Commerce Avenue plans to make its 36-bed “Dignity Bus” available beginning at 9 p.m nightly during the bout of cold weather.

She said additional resources for Indian River County would likely be announced after her staff contacts additional nonprofits in the area.
