Meet TCPalm’s 2022 Football Defense All-Area Team

At the end of each season,TCPspanlm selects All-Area teams recognizing the top athletes in each sport.

Area coaches nominated players from their own teams and from other schools and along with research going through the data for games, meets, matches and tournaments throughout the regular season and postseason, TCPspanlm makes its selections of the All-Area teams.

Player of the Year

Dylan Fatovich, Jensen Beach

Jensen Beach High School’s defensive back Dylan Fatovich (18) runs the ball against Fort Pierce Central in a high school football game on Friday, Aug. 26, 2022 at Jensen Beach High School. Jensen Beach High School won 21-7.

Year: Junior

Highlights: Fatovich was one of the most productive players in all facets of the game in the area but did his best work in the secondary and on special teams for the Falcons. Picking off seven passes to lead the area, Fatovich added 49 tackles from his safety spot and returned a fumble for a touchdown. In the return game, he took three punts back for touchdowns, one kickoff for a score and for good measure added six touchdown catches on offense with his contributions a huge reason why Jensen Beach won 10 games and reached a 3S regional final.

First Team

Josh Meltzer, John Carroll Catholic

Year: Senior

Highlights: With teams all season having to worry about his defensive line partner Wilky Denaud, Meltzer capitalized to be a menace to ball carriers and quarterbacks in his senior year. Leading the area with 32 tackles for a loss, Meltzer had 64 tackles in total, added four sacks and forced four fumbles leading the way for the Rams to make it all the way to the 1S Final Four.

Julius Puryear, Jensen Beach

Year: Sophomore

Highlights: Puryear backed up a strong freshman year with an amazing sophomore season all over the front seven for the Falcons. Racking up 86 tackles, Puryear had 29 that went for a loss and added 17 sacks, 14 quarterback hurries, 11 pass breakups and forced three fumbles, had two fumble recoveries and added an interception.

Wilky Denaud, John Carroll Catholic

Year: Senior

Highlights: Denaud, an Auburn signee, was a target of offensive lines all season but still found a way to be an impactful figure on the Ram defensive front. Totaling 79 tackles, Denaud had 16 that went for a loss and added five sacks helping his team reach the 1S Final Four.

Christopher Pierre, Fort Pierce Westwood

Year: Junior

Highlights: On the interior of the Panther defensive front, Pierre was a force all season. Pierre registered 20 tackles for a loss, 50 tackles in total and added six sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Jahari Grant, Treasure Coast

Vero Beach hosts Treasure Coast on Friday, Oct. 28, 2022, in Vero Beach. Vero Beach won 10-7.

Year: Junior

Highlights: Grant lined up against top-flight competition all season long and shined at defensive tackle with his strength and agility. Grant totaled eight sacks and 41 tackles to help the Titans reach a 4S regional semifinal.

Kezni Brown, Vero Beach

Year: Senior

Highlights: In the heart of Vero’s defensive line, Brown, a Long Island signee, was a different maker all season. Brown collected 50 tackles, 20 that went for a loss and added 3.5 sacks and forced two fumbles helping Vero Beach win 11 games.

Carlos McCormack, Jensen Beach

Year: Sophomore

Highlights: McCormack leapt onto the scene in his sophomore season and turned into one of the most disruptive edge rushers in the area. In total, McCormack made 85 tackles and impressively forced seven fumbles, recovered six fumbles and added 13 sacks and 19 tackles for a loss.

Judah Michel, Centennial

Year: Senior

Highlights: Wherever Michel was assigned on the Eagle defense, he made plays from off the edge to linebacker and even in the secondary as a nickel back. For the season, Michel made 76 tackles, 18 that went for a loss and collected 10 sacks, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and broke up six passes.

Keyshawn Campbell, Vero Beach

Year: Senior

Highlights: Campbell, a Troy signee, left his mark on ballcarriers all year in his final season quarterbacking Vero’s defense at linebacker. Totaling 83 tackles, Campbell recorded 22.5 that went for a loss and added seven sacks helping Vero Beach reach a 4S regional final.

DJ Dunbar, Centennial

Year: Senior

Highlights: Dunbar was impactful wherever he was planted at on defense and made his mark at linebacker for the Eagles. Totaling 103 tackles, Dunbar registered 22 that went for a loss and added three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and an interception.

Isaiah Beaubrun, Fort Pierce Central

Jensen Beach High School hosts Fort Pierce Central in a high school football game on Friday, Aug. 26, 2022 at Jensen Beach High School. Jensen Beach High School won 21-7.

Year: Senior

Highlights: Beaubrun was everywhere on defense for the Cobras from his linebacker spot, leading the area with 116 tackles including 12 that went for a loss and forced four fumbles.

TJ Alford, John Carroll Catholic

Year: Sophomore

Highlights: In the middle of the Ram defense that marched to a 1S regional final, Alford was a tackling machine totaling 103 with six that went for a loss and added three sacks.

Jaylyn Monds, Fort Pierce Westwood

Year: Junior

Highlights: Monds continued to show why he’s one of the top athletes in the area with his cover skills at cornerback breaking up 19 passes and grabbing two interceptions. Not afraid to stick his nose in in run support, Monds had 37 tackles and forced three fumbles and also on offense was valuable to the Panthers totaling nine touchdowns.

Jeron Atwater, Martin County

Year: Sophomore

Highlights: Making the most of his playing time earned to start the season, Atwater was a rover all over the second and third level of the defense for the Tigers making plays. For the season, Atwater totaled 74 tackles, 13 that went for a loss and added six pass breakups and five sacks.

Kymani Edwin, Treasure Coast

Year: Senior

Highlights: Routinely going up against top-rated wide receivers all season due to the Titans incredibly tough schedule, Edwin more than held his own at cornerback. Edwin picked off three passes, broke up 14 more, forced two fumbles and added 40 tackles in run support.

Jamari Marshall, Jensen Beach

Year: Senior

Highlights: Marshall played all over the field for the Falcons but did his best work flying around in the back end of the defense. Totaling 71 tackles, Marshall had 12 that went for a loss, picked off four passes and had three sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries while also making an impact on offense accounting for over 500 yards of offense and four touchdowns.

Tyler Patterson, Fort Pierce Central

Year: Senior

Highlights: Patterson, an FIU commit, had an outstanding year handling kicking duties for the Cobras as he produced 12 touchbacks, had a punting average of 36.8 yards and pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line 10 times.

Co-Coaches of the Year

Tim Caffey, Jensen Beach, Mickey Groody, John Carroll Catholic

Highlights: Coming off a 3-win season in 2021, Caffey and his staff brought out the best in their kids in 2022. The Falcons won several games with strong fourth quarter performances and brought home the District 12-3S title. In the postseason, Jensen Beach doubled their number of playoff victories in program history with two wins, won 10 games for the first time in program history and reached a regional final also for the first time as a program. Groody and his team had high expectations entering the season coming off two straight regional final appearances and the Rams rolled all regular season with only one loss getting another shot at a state semifinal. The Rams downed Lakeland Christian to reach their first Final Four since 2003 and came up just shy of reaching the 1S state final, finishing with a 10-2 record.
