FORT PIERCE — A man Fort Pierce Police say sped away Friday during a traffic stop in a stolen vehicle, later crashed and died from his injuries after being pulled from a canal, according to a department media release.

At about 5:30 p.m. Friday, an unidentified person reported their vehicle stolen from the 1300 block of North 25th Street. About 30 minutes later Fort Pierce Police officers attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, according to spokesperson April Lee.

The male driver, whom police did not identify, failed to stop and while fleeing police, crashed the vehicle into a canal at North 17th Street and Canal Terrace.

Officers entered the canal, pulled the male from the vehicle, and took lifesaving measures. The male was transported to a local hospital, where he died. Police released no further information about the male, including his age and residence.
