Friday’s scores
Lincoln Park Academy’s flag football team produced two victories at Friday’s second annual Autism Acceptance Invitational hosted by Centennial High School at South County Stadium.
The Greyhounds (7-2) pitched shutouts in both games, first knocking off a red-hot Fort Pierce Westwood team that had won five straight 25-0.
Lincoln Park Academy would go on to defeat the host Eagles (4-6) 20-0 and now have won five games in a row.
The Panthers (7-2) did defeat Centennial 9-0 to go 1-1 for the round-robin tournament.
Softball
Centennial 2, Sebastian River 1: Hailey Brereton struck out 16 batters and allowed just two hits to help the Eagles (8-6) knock off the area’s last unbeaten team in Sebastian.
All the runs in the game were scored in the fifth inning as Brereton and Victoria Wehrberger for Sebastian River were tough to hit all night long.
Centennial’s Carmela Baker drew a one-out walk in the top of the fifth and Myrna Pratt dropped down a bunt that was thrown away down the right field line that allowed Baker to score all the way from first.
Autumn Prakash brought in Pratt with a perfect bunt to give Centennial a 2-0 lead.
The Sharks (11-1) generated a threat thanks to patience at the plate in the bottom of the inning and got within a run after Amonty Johnson walked with the bases loaded to force in a run.
Prakash ended the threat with a lunging catch on a shallow fly ball to left field, hanging on after a collision with a teammate to hold the lead for the Eagles.
Brereton struck out Johnson with the tying run at first base to wrap up a great pitcher’s duel with Sebastian River’s Victoria Wehrberger, who struck out six in the loss.
John Carroll Catholic 8, Master’s Academy 5: Makayla Ortiz went 2-for-4 with a triple and drove in three runs to lead the Rams (8-4) to victory. Sammi Rychter went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Olivia Leen had a double and an RBI, Briley Orton had a hit and drove in two runs and Sophia Loreto struck out seven in a complete-game effort for John Carroll.
