Hit-and-run suspect sought in Fort Pierce accident that killed a woman Tuesday

FORT PIERCE — Fort Pierce Police are asking the community for information to identify a hit-an-run driver who killed a woman Tuesday.

An 18-year-old woman died and a 19-year-old man was left in critical condition following a hit-and-run two-car collision Tuesday in a city neighborhood, police said.

An infant who also was in the car survived, Fort Pierce police said Thursday.

The two teens and the baby were traveling south in the 100 block of South 13th Street at about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday when their Kia sedan was struck by a Toyota SUV that was traveling west in the 1200 block of Boston Avenue.

The Toyota failed to yield the right of way to the Kia, police said, adding that the driver of the Toyota abandoned the SUV and fled on foot. The vehicle, which is white, was found inoperable at the scene.

The three occupants of the Kia were taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, where the woman died Wednesday. The man remained in critical condition Thursday, said Officer Shane Stokes.

“The infant is going to be fine,” Stokes said.

Police were still searching Thursday for the SUV driver, he said.

“We believe it is going to be a male,” Stokes said. He had no other identifying details about the driver.

Police asked anyone with information about the crash to call officers at 772-302-4764 or 772-979-1469, or to remain anonymous by calling Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-800-273-8477.

For those wishing to submit information by email, the agency also provided email addresses for officers Stokes and Fabian Zamora at [email protected] or [email protected].
