Dining review: Discovering a great place for authentic Mexican food in Stuart

An appetizer of chicken flautas were crisp and tasty.

The Red Grill is a located in the Riverside Shoppes in Stuart.

Martin County is home to many wonderful restaurants and sometimes I just put the top down on the convertible and meander around the side streets and strip malls looking for someplace new. It was one of those days that I discovered The Red Grill located in the very back of The Riverside Shoppes in Stuart.

I walked up the stairs and it seemed like out of nowhere, there was this towering, colorful space with an outdoor bar and lots of tables and chairs. There was no one around, so I continued on to the door of the main building.

Once inside, I was taken aback by the roomy gorgeous interior, including tables, booths, and another lovely bar. Where had this place come from?

Answer, New York City, the Upper East Side. I decided we’d stay for lunch.

Our server, Cyndy, was a delight. She brought us some house-made chips and salsa to munch on while we perused the menus. The chips were light and airy, but the salsa was a bit too thin to stay on the chip.

The carnitas michoacanas consisted of slow braised pork sautéed with caramelized onions.

We decided to start with an order of crispy chicken flautas ($7.95). The rolled corn tortillas were stuffed with shredded chicken, deep fried, and topped with sour cream, salty cotija cheese, and served with a dollop of guacamole.

Since it was still early and being a lover of chorizo, for my entree, I went for the breakfast burrito ($11.95). A large grilled flour tortilla was stuffed with moist scrambled eggs, chorizo, tender home fries, peppers, and cheese. It was drizzled with creama and served with a small guacamole salad. I found the chorizo rather bland.

My husband had much better luck with his carnitas michoacanas. ($22.95) Slow braised pork sautéed with caramelized onion, orange, jalapenos, and deglazed with tequila. The dish was served with Spanish rice and flour tortillas. He thoroughly enjoyed it.

Fried ice cream for dessert was more than enough to share.

Never one to shy away from dessert, I ordered the fried ice cream. ($6.99). A big dip of French vanilla ice cream with a sweet, crispy coating was drizzled with chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and presented in a fried tortilla bowl.

It was a refreshing end to a heavy meal. We both took home leftovers as the portions were quite large.

While dining we saw some big groups including a gang of golfers and a ladies-who-lunch group celebrating a birthday. Everyone was having a good time and the manager was very present. If you’re a fan of authentic Mexican food, I think you’ll enjoy it.
