Since 1964, the Floridspan Ocespannogrspanphic Society on Hutchinson Island in Stuart has linked visitors to its 57-acre campus to educate, research and advocate for the adjacent Indispann River Lspangoon.
The nonprofit’s 12 Days of Christmas wish this year is donations to repair its observation deck at the Indian River Lagoon damaged during Hurricane Nicole, said Abigail Flood, director of development and marketing.
“The observation deck allows visitors to the Coastal Center to be able to take in the Indian River Lagoon from a unique perspective. Guests of all ages, including school groups, volunteers and families can take in the abundance of wildlife both above and below the water and get a true sense of the biodiversity present in the estuary,” Flood said.

Being able to reopen the Observation Deck will enhance the experience for anyone who is alongside the Indian River Lagoon. Florida Oceanographic’s mission is to inspire environmental stewardship of Florida’s coastal ecosystems. One of the best ways to inspire protection and preservation of our waterways, is for people to be able to learn about them, experience them and witness the wildlife that exists within them.
The Indian River Lagoon is one of the most biodiverse estuaries in North America and it’s possible to observe herons, roseate spoonbills, manatees, dolphins, dozens of fish species, crabs, jellyfish, invertebrates and much more from Florida Oceanographic Society’s Observation Deck. Inspiring environmental stewardship helps to protect our waterways for generations to come.
