INDIAN RIVER COUNTY − Reports of a man firing a handgun and threatening a shootout with law enforcement led to the evacuation of an apartment building and later, the man’s arrest on two gun-related charges, law enforcement officials said.

Standoff: At least 24 people were asked to evacuate one Pemberly Palms Apartment Homes building off 8th Street while roads around the complex between U.S. 1 and Indian River Boulevard were closed from roughly 5:45 p.m. to 11: 30 p.m. Sunday, an Indian River County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said.

‘One round’: Reports of a man who fired a handgun at the complex and calls later from someone who said they heard the man say he was, “probably going to get into a shootout with law enforcement,” led to what was described as a standoff after the man locked himself in his apartment and refused to leave, said sheriff’s Lt. Joe Abollo.

Arrest: The man was arrested at 11:35 p.m. and charged with discharging a firearm in public and possession of a weapon by a felon, according to jail records Monday. Shortly after 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Abollo said there were no hostages no one was injured.

Altogether, the agency’s SWAT unit, crisis negotiators and its detectives as well as officers from Vero Beach police and St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office were called to the complex throughout the incident.
