Apartment building evacuated in SWAT standoff after reports of gunfire; 1 arrest

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY − Reports of a man firing a handgun and threatening a shootout with law enforcement led to the evacuation of an apartment building and later, the man’s arrest on two gun-related charges, law enforcement officials said.

Standoff: At least 24 people were asked to evacuate one Pemberly Palms Apartment Homes building off 8th Street while roads around the complex between U.S. 1 and Indian River Boulevard were closed from roughly 5:45 p.m. to 11: 30 p.m. Sunday, an Indian River County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said.

Law enforcement officers and fire rescue workers gathered on 8th Street outside Pemberly Palms Apartment Homes around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, March 5, 2023, during a lengthy negotiation attempt with a man who refused to leave his apartment after firing a handgun, Indian River County Sheriff's Office officials said.

‘One round’: Reports of a man who fired a handgun at the complex and calls later from someone who said they heard the man say he was, “probably going to get into a shootout with law enforcement,” led to what was described as a standoff after the man locked himself in his apartment and refused to leave, said sheriff’s Lt. Joe Abollo.

Messages over a loud speaker saying "... you are under arrest, come out with your hands up..." could be heard from 8th Street where a SWAT unit along with crisis negotiators and detectives from Indian River County Sheriff's Office were gathered attempting to reach a man thought to have a gun inside a unit at Pemberly Palms Apartment Homes Sunday around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, March 5, 2023.

Arrest: The man was arrested at 11:35 p.m. and charged with discharging a firearm in public and possession of a weapon by a felon, according to jail records Monday. Shortly after 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Abollo said there were no hostages no one was injured.

Altogether, the agency’s SWAT unit, crisis negotiators and its detectives as well as officers from Vero Beach police and St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office were called to the complex throughout the incident.
