FORT PIERCE — A man Fort Pierce Police say sped away Friday during a traffic stop in a stolen vehicle, later crashed and died from his injuries after being pulled from a canal, according to a department media release.
At about 5:30 p.m. Friday, an unidentified person reported their vehicle stolen from the 1300 block of North 25th Street. About 30 minutes later Fort Pierce Police officers attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, according to spokesperson April Lee.
The male driver, whom police did not identify, failed to stop and while fleeing police, crashed the vehicle into a canal at North 17th Street and Canal Terrace.
Officers entered the canal, pulled the male from the vehicle, and took lifesaving measures. The male was transported to a local hospital, where he died. Police released no further information about the male, including his age and residence.

Florida Highway Patrol officials responded to the crash scene and are currently investigating the fatal incident.
