Bathtub Reef Beach open, but remains unguarded after erosion

MARTIN COUNTY — Bathtub Reef Beach reopened Monday, but is now unguarded after workers moved lifeguard towers off the beach Thursday because of erosion, county officials said.

The beach remains open to the public, but no lifeguards are on site.

Despite the reopening, significant erosion is still causing ongoing changes to the beach on Hutchinson Island at 1585 S.E. MacArthur Blvd., county officials said.

Bathtub beach was closed for almost two months. Workers added sand to strengthen the beach dunes after flooding from Hurricane Nicole closed parts of Southeast Macarthur Boulevard. Hurricane Ian also caused significant erosion on the coastline.

Several other Martin County beaches remain guarded, said county spokeswoman Martha Ann Kneiss in a news release.

Jensen Beach, Stuart Beach and Hobe Sound beach and other small beaches have county lifeguards, she said.
