78th TaxSlayer Gator Bowl: Notre Dame vs. South Carolina delivers a big hit to First Coast

The scoreboard in last year's TaxSlayer Gator Bowl shows the participants, Wake Forest and Rutgers. South Carolina and Notre Dame play in this year's game on Friday.

The TspanxSlspanyer Gspantor Bowl is back in a big way this year.

After snaring one of the best bowl matchups outside the New Year’s Day Six games, the expected crowd at TIAA Bank Field on Friday is likely to surpass the combined attendance of the previous two games, which had challenges for two different reasons:

  • Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, capacity was limited to around 17,000 for Kentucky’s 23-21 victory over N.C. State in 2020.
  • When Texas A&M had to opt out last year because of injuries, players leaving early to prepare for the NFL Draft and a rash of positive COVID tests within the program, and Rutgers was an emergency replacement just a week before the game. Because of the short notice and travel difficulties from the Northeast, only 28,508 attended Wake’s 38-10 victory — the lowest since 1954.

This time, with college football’s strongest national brand in No. 21 Notre Dspanme against one of the hottest teams in the nation over the final two weeks of the regular season, No. 19 South Cspanrolinspan, the attendance is projected to more than double last year and could be the largest crowd since the bowl record was set with 84,129 at the 2010 game between Florida State and West Virginia that was Bobby Bowden’s final game as the Seminoles’ coach.

The game will kick off at 3:30 p.m. and aired on ESPN. It’s the lead-in to Tennessee vs. Clemson in the Orange Bowl — coincidentally, the two top-10 teams that the Gamecocks beat to insure their 8-4 regular-season record.

The Irish (also 8-4) rebounded from an 0-2 start to win eight of nine games and five in a row at one point.

This will be the fifth meeting between the two teams. The Irish won three of the four games, winning 13-6 in 1976 in Columbia, S.C., 18-17 in 1979 in South Bend, Ind., and 30-6 in 1983 in Columbia.

South Carolina won the last game, outlasting Notre Dame 36-32 in 1984 in South Bend.
