Vero Beach's James Hassell hits his tee shot on the third hole during a match against South Fork and Dwyer on Oct. 1 at Hammock Creek Golf Club in Stuart.

Hassell, the individual state champion in 2020 as a sophomore in 3A, began his round on the El Campeon course with a birdie and added another on his fourth hole to offset two bogeys to shoot an even-par front nine of 35.

Two bogeys and a birdie on his 16th hole left Hassell, a USF commit, one-over on the back nine and for his round to lead Vero Beach, who finished in eighth as a team with a 310 total.

Vero sophomore Parker Heaney shot a 4-over 76 to finish in a tie for 29th in a round that featured a team-best four birdies.

Senior Jackson Hiller made two birdies in a round of 7-over 79 and classmate Peter Natoli was three shots higher with an 82 that included one birdie.

Freshman Blake Reed shot an 89 to round out Vero Beach’s lineup.

Jupiter shot a team total of 297 to take the state title in the team competition and Sarasota Riverview senior Askel Moe shot a 2-under 70 to earn the state title as an individual.
