Football: How Week 11 high school football results could impact FHSAA playoff seedings

We’re one day away from the Floridspan School Athletic Associspantion announcing the 2022 football playoff brackets.

With the exception of three games Saturday, teams put the final touches on their regular-season resumes on Thursday and Friday.

The FHSAA has not announced what formula MaxPreps is using to determine the power rankings, so there’s no definite way to say who’s in/out or who will earn a specific seed.

What we can basically understand though, is that winning in Week 11 should help a team’s case and losing could hurt.

Using the Week 11 power rankings as a starting point, here’s how Thursday and Friday’s games could impact the brackets.

Class 4M

Forest Hill's Andrew Davis (3) runs the ball in for a touchdown while being chased by Lake Worth's Enzo Storani (22) during the second quarter of the football game between Forest Hill and host Lake Worth on Friday, September 23, 2022, in Lake Worth Beach, FL.

Region 1

Seminole held a narrow edge over Apopka for the No. 1 seed in the Week 11 power rankings. Seminole was off in Week 11, but Apopka lost to Wekiva 20-14, which should cement the Seminoles as the No. 1 seed.

Lake Mary and Hagerty were separated by less than half a point for the No. 4 seed and home-field advantage in the first round. Lake Mary beat Mainland 20-14. Hagerty lost to Oviedo 26-18.

Region 2

East Lake’s 63-34 win over Countryside, coupled with West Orange’s loss against Osceola (Kissimmee) could push East Lake up to the No. 1 seed. West Orange held a lead of less than a point in the Week 11 power rankings.

Sumner was the No. 5 seed last week and beat five-win Middleton 27-14. It will be interesting to see whether that win can propel the Stingrays ahead of Ocoee (No. 3) and Plant (No. 4) as both teams were off in Week 11.

Dr. Phillips, Olympia and Steinbrenner were separated by less than half a point for the final two spots. Steinbrenner beat Riverview 49-6; Olympia beat South Lake 41-20 and Dr. Phillips lost to Jones 35-14. The possible silver lining for Dr. Phillips is an eight-win Jones team should boost their strength of schedule.

Region 3

Monarch beat Deerfield Beach 18-7 and should remain in the No. 2 seed ahead of Palm Beach Gardens, which beat Park Vista 42-7.

Forest Hill held a lead of 1.12 points over Jupiter for the No. 8 seed in the Week 11 power rankings. Jupiter beat South Fork 27-7 and Forest Hill lost to Somerset Academy-Canyons 43-12 in Week 11. If strength of schedule is a factor, South Fork won two games in 2022; Somerset won five.

Region 4

Somerset Academy, Miami, Cypress Bay and Goleman were separated by a total of 2.918 points for the final three spots. All except for Miami won in Week 11. Miami was the No. 7 seed in the Week 11 power rankings but lost to Miami Jackson 46-0.

Wekiva’s 20-14 win against Apopka should be enough to hold off Horizon for the No. 7 seed. Horizon beat Windermere 29-14.

Region 2

East Bay and Largo were separated by less than a point for the No. 4 seed. East Bay beat King 45-0; Largo beat Northeast 14-13.
